Is Obama Serious About Protecting Our Liberty?

Obama, a former Constitutional law professor, promised during his campaign to curb the unconstitutional practices of the executive branch.

If he is serious about this, he must appoint vigorous advocates for constitutional principles and the rule of law to serve as heads of the following agencies:

  • Department of Justice
  • FBI
  • CIA

  • Treasury (which oversees the Secret Service and - of course - the bailouts)
  • NSA

Our first order of business must be to pressure Obama to make decent appointments in these areas, to make sure that liberty is protected.

Obama is already appointing cabinet members, so we must exert pressure now.

The Sec Def should ideally also be someone who respects the rights of civilian populations, especially since army units are being deployed by Bush on U.S. soil.

  1. We'll need more than warm bodies in those positions. Mouthing the words "liberty" and "Constitution" (or "patriot" or "rescue", etc.) guarantees nothing in the way of understanding, and is one of the hallmarks of those who are most effective at destroying the cash-value of those words. Obama's great at telling people what they want to hear.

And for a guy pushing the Fairness Doctrine, I expect the exact opposite of fairness on the ground. And so I don't expect him to protect our liberty or Constitutional rights. Both parties sold-out on those principles some time ago.

The only hope I have is that Obama will be a wishy-washy water-treader and go the way of Jimmy Carter in four years, and not freight-train us into a Progressively destitute and defenseless country a la FDR.

  2. I have to agree with Katie there GW. I love reading your blog, its the best out there, but this might be a little "pie in the sky" so to speak.

I lost trust in Obama when he voted for the revised FISA. How can he call themselves a "constitutional lawyer" if he voted for that piece of trash legislation.

We'll see what kind of president he'll be when he picks his cabinet. He already has Zbigniew Bryzynski (sp?) in one ear. If he picks longtime Bildeberger Chuck Hagel like I've been hearing for a cabinet position, I believe he will have tipped his hand as to where he really wants to lead us. We'll also see when it comes time to renew the (UN)Patriot Act.

  3. One look at Obama's corporate donor list which includes Wall St and legal firms, plus his fulsome appearance in front of AIPAC, plus a look at his voting record, including an unconditional "Yes" to the Bailout Bill does not really leave any doubt as to where his loyalties truly lie.
