You Are Not Authorized to See These Pictures of the Oil Spill, Citizen ... Do Not Look!

Preface: The title is a parody of the fact that the government has effectively made it a felony to take pictures of oiled wildlife. Apologists for the new law say that photographers can simply use a telephoto lense to get the shots. But the best shots can only be taken from up close.

Indeed, BP has tried to cover up its blunders by lowballing spill estimates, keeping reporters out of areas hardest hit by the oil (and see this, this, this and this) and threatening to arrest them if they try to take pictures (and see this), hiding dead birds and other sealife, and using dispersants to hide the amount of spilled oil (the dispersants are only worsening the damage caused by the spill).

This post is focused on showing the dead birds and other sealife which BP is trying to hide.

  2. The moral imperative of life is to live a life that detracts not at all from the lives available to those who will follow us into this world.

This statement -above- is a categorically true moral statement that entirely envelopes all our logically valid moral notions -both inclusively and exclusively.

"Categorically" means, -always, -regardless the circumstances, AND -without any exception.

When something is categorically true, as is the moral imperative, you ignore it with sure peril at hand.

Based on the moral imperative of life, there is an entirely new knowledge set yet to be fully explored, comprehended and brought forth.

This is the ONLY door open to human free will.

Without this new knowledge set, humanity will NOT survive.

That knowledge set is called, Categorical Knowledge.

ANYONE who ignores Categorical Knowledge -is inviting this sort of disaster, and FAR WORSE again -for the future.

The sort of problem represented in these photos cannot be fixed with scientific knowledge. It is science that gave rise to this problem.

Science provides no solutions to this or any other problem for which -such a solution- does not also bring forth other science-caused problems tenfold the magnitude of the original problem science meant to address.

Who has the moral right to destroy the planet with their intellectual curiosity and bravado?

    No one does.

The moral imperative of life is to live a life that detracts not at all from the lives available to those who will follow us into this world.

  3. Thank you for showing us what the media refuses to. It's people like you, and the photographers who took these pictures, that provide needed information about events that affect us, and where big media(network AND cable news) continuously fail in a big way.

    Thank you.

  16. Humanity= stupidity.

We are not doing enough to clean up this devastating disaster. Without nature, plants, water, animals we could not be here..we would be dead. AND yet BP and other organizations are not doing enough to clean up this oil spill. They have the money but are not using it. They are cutting costs because after all all human's care about is money and making a profit NOT losing money!. People need to be thankful and grateful that we have this planet to live on and procreate on. Instead we don't give a sh*t about it and that's truly sad. I am ashamed what humanity is doing to this beautiful planet. Without this planet we wouldn't exsist.

  17. I'd still like to see what TPTB/BP has to say about using straw to soak up the oil:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7JkFW5nwMQ

I suppose that solution does not suit TPTB...no toxic dispersants for some connected people to profit from I guess.

I wonder if they'll let "The Whale" do it's work? They've delayed deployment by a week...if you haven't heard of it, it's this huge ship that some crazy Taiwanese shipping magnate billionaire had retrofitted as a skimmer and sent it to the Gulf - on a whim and on his own dime. Amazing.

  22. I hate government - I hate Corporations. They are evil by definition.

The idea that they can criminalize photography because it hurts their 'image' is one more reason to hate both government and corporations.

How do we free ourselves from their police power over the destruction of the planet???

    How did we get here?

I voted Obama... I believed the bastard was a good guy..... but if he had a hand in criminalizing photography of this disaster he's no better than any other pol.

All they care about is hiding their failures and enriching themselves and their friends.

Nothing will change until we get violent.-- I mean those of us with something to lose...

Ordinary, God fearing, taxpaying Americans will have to go nuclear to make these monsters give up the use of police power to protect the guilty and punish the innocent.

    America is dead.

  23. corexit's not just about money. it kills things much quicker and keeps more oil under sea so we can't see it all.

secondly there is growing information about second leaks occuring, either from the pipe leaking deep under the seabed which is a known fact, or a 10-20 mile away initial failed drill attempt, which damaged safety equipment and combined with further drilling practice 'negligence' (pumping water is deliberate, everyone is taught it's not the way to do it) helped cause the leak to occur.

Focusing on the spill is the tip of the iceberg. The spill is our second concern at the moment, stopping it is our first! This should be an international effort, the stakes are so high on this one as the partially missing pipe casing and now directly exposed rock further deteriorate. Can you eat poisoned and oily fish in your country if the entire patchy seafloor let go? What happens to the water cycle?

Forget 9/11 style state terrorism, this is the ultimate in false flags. Convenient patsy for the economy collapsing, 'government doing things for your own good' etc etc. BP is just the fall guy, complicity goes right through the roof of the white house and into the bankers, global elite and other bankrollers of the perpetual, 100 year old, barely improved, everlasting oil technology.

Don't cause harm, loss, injury, breach of the peace or defraud in contract.
And secondly without claiming your rights, you have none.

  25. While this may be the direct responsibility of BP, it is also our collective responsibility. We share a part of the blame. Let's act responsibly and as adults.
Every time we turn a light, every time we turn our car engine, every time we use plastic..we are using oil derived products.

We are supporting this industry with our actions. Cleaning up is only a first step, and BPs responsibility...where is ours? as citizens and consumers? What is each one of us do in our daily lives to reduce our dependency from oil so that this industry eventually disappears from the earth?

  28. Not enough people are aware, thus not enough people care. One has to know enough to care enough and one has to care enough to save, to ACT... There seems to be a massive disconnect between the realities that confront us (from ocean acidification to the Great pacific garbage patch) and the every day choices we make! This tragedy is one amongst many, and I am not sure I understand the ignorance and consequent apathy most people cocoon themselves in... This lack of heart is going to be the deciding factor for humanity's survival on earth. We have to grow a conscience and comprehend that all life is interlinked. We have one shot at working toward a collective future, and NOW is the time to call that shot.

I will say I at least partially respect those men that were crying, those are they few bp board members that may now just understand how we feel down here in good old Louisiana.

  35. @Rich

It has very little to do with the media 'refusing' to show these images and tell these stories. There is a very literal media ban on the beaches and work areas. They've said media can't get within 65 feet of oil-spill areas.

There are some reporters who've managed to break through in some cases but matters aren't helped by the fact that ignorant people like you are around either. I guarantee you that news is largely based on access, something that is few and far between here,

It feels good to know I did something, to be less reliant on oil. Think of it, if everyone did this we would cut our reliance on oil in half. Thats a good start.

My sister has a honda fit, and we swapped cars. Of course it was on empty when I got it. I put in 20 dollars and drove over one hour to my destination, then about one hour back. The gas needle didnt even budge. If this was a truck it would be empty. For those who drive gas guzzlers - you are being robbed , your money is vanishing. Think of the things you could do with the gas savings people!

There's no doubt about it; this is one of the greatest disasters I've ever witnessed in my 25 years of life, and it frustrates me to know that it won't be over by the time I'm old and dying. By then, Haiti will be rebuilt, 9/11 and the war will be nothing but a chapter in history books and Katrina will be just another natural disaster the u.s. has so easily overcome.... but this oil will still be polluting that water, and will have killed more animals and lifeforms than there are people on this earth.

  69. This is the saddest thing in our lifetime...hopefully it will not be repeated like World War II. However, humanity's penchant for war, natural resource extraction, and capitalist pursuits will only leave us on a dead planet. We are a horrible species...all this greatness in our minds, yet we choose to allow civilization to be co-opted by the ones most diseased in the minds...absolute power has corrupted our earth. Maybe, maybe, a smaller population once or thrice decimated will be able to recover and this era will be done. Until we can handle our ethical responsibilities, then we must collectively stop pretending issues like LeBron James, Spies like us, et cetera et cetera matter. A national holiday must be declared for lest we forget about this tragedy.

  70. @George:

Not all car trips are long. Some jobs are more bike/walk/transit-friendly, some are less. Look for opportunities to not use your car, and take them. You may find (over time) that there are more opportunities than you thought. I started biking to work, about 40%, over 4 years ago.

If work has no shower, hot weather is a problem; you can wear more clothes in the winter, but there is a limit to how much you can take off (the riding is relatively comfortable, it's the stopping that sucks).

I ride a cargo bike, a nice, expensive one. A less expensive one, that hits many of the sweet spots (can carry kids easily) is the Madsen. Google it. Still not cheap, but gets a lot done. Think "bicycle minivan". My bike is more like "bicycle pickup". Very cheapest route to a cargo bike is to take an existing mountain bike (no rear shocks allowed) and add an XtraCycle extension to it. It works, I used one for three years (7500 miles) before upgrading.

You CAN ride in the winter, helps if you ride a mountain bike, they (Nokian) make snow tires for bikes. Get carbide studs, not steel studs. Balaclava, ski gloves, boots, lights, you are good to go.

My ride is ten miles (one-way). It sucked at first, but I knew I could do it because I did it (easily, and more) when I was a kid. It doesn't suck now.

I hope this helps, I realize that many people think I sound like a nut, but look where "normal" has gotten us. Start small, work up to, and push yourself a little bit, and don't let up.

But, remember that oil is used for plastic, lubrication, fuel, pesticides, paint, rubber, pretty much everything. To speak of just stopping is ludicrous.

To speak of using "less" power is ludicrous. It not only will never happen, it can't happen. Unless, of course, you turn off your TV, iPhone, computer and lights? Didn't think so.

However, we can use more efficient and environmentally friendly power. France produces more electricity than it uses, all nuclear. Canada, Japan and China are all building more nuclear plants. Hysteria aside, nuclear is very safe, very clean, and very efficient. There's no point in arguing. In twenty years, you WILL be using nuclear power. The question is, will it be domestic or foreign?

  78. Just a little reality check: where did the images come from? AP, Reuters, NASA, U.S. Navy. Who are they THE MEDIA and THE GOVERNMENT.

Reuters, MSN, Yahoo, Esquire, Slate, NY Times, NY Post, Daily Morning News, Seattle Times, on and on and on have used these same images to tell of the horror of the spill. They're not keeping it from you. Almost every single news outlet has front page stories about the spill since day one and continue to do so as can be seen today (see msn.com, news.yahoo.com, news.aol.com, nypost.com, nytimes.com, foxnews.com, cnn.com) it's everywhere!

65 feet is paltry considering you have paparazzi hang out of a helicopter and get a shot of your favorite celeb in her backyard from 1/4 of a mile away. I'm so tired of hearing the photographers act all namby-pamby about how the distance affects the lens choice and exposure and BLAH BLAH BLAH! I'd love to hear a war correspondent griping like that "well the soldiers wouldn't let me get close enough to the bomb so I could get a really nice shot with my wide angle, so I skipped it instead." Bull! A real reporter is going to harangue the coast guard commander until he gets on a boat or other transport. I real reporter is going to go and shoot what he can and potentially break the rules to get a shot. None of this sissy "but I might get arrested" or "I'll have to adjust the exposure and it won't be a pretty as it should." Are they reporters or are they making pretty post cards?

The other frustrating thing about this stupidity is look at Richard Matthews up to his eyeballs in the oil for nothing other than the sensationalism of it. Why not put on a Hazmat suit and then dive, you can get the same underwater pictures without risking serious illness from the oil, dispersant, and decayed and dead animals. This is exactly why they made the 65 foot rule, to keep people like Matthews and hundreds and thousands of bloggers from attempting the same thing, possibly damaging equipment to get a better look, or reconfiguring equipment because they saw something on the internet that said the buoys should be zig-zagged not straight. Not only that but they're protecting the state and government from lawsuits. If they didn't impose some restriction you'd have a bunch of people suing about how they got sick from the oil, or the dispersant caused third degree burns, or they got some awful bacterial infection from handling dead fish and why didn't the government warn them!?

For God's sake! They are supposed to be outrageous, not just heartbreaking. More than sad, that's absurd! We should be willing to do something about it, to take a stand on this degrading situation.

  83. I defy anyone to look at these images and not feel partly responsible - anyone who drives a car, flies on a plane, fishes from a boat or catches a bus, has created this demand for oil, that is now destroying all life in the Gulf of Mexico. I am devastated and feel helpless to change anything. The world needs to invest in revewable energy NOW! why are we waiting when we have the technology...GREED and POWER...once we upset the balance to the degree the scales are tipped irreparably what future is there for us???? but really... really, damn you if you want to blame this all on BP. anyone wasting time pointing fingers at this point is wrecklessly harping on a very obivious point, and not taking the situation seriously. your blame is a 1st world luxury, that. thanks to our first world habits, will not be possible for much longer. enjoy your food, air and clean water while you still have it.

Yesterday driving down the river road in St. John parish I saw oil in the drainage canals along side the road. It is no longer on the coast. It is in the fresh water now. Today is July 13, 2010. Day 85.

It is not just the oil, but also the dispersant they sprayed on it. The dispersant is POISONOUS. It is going to seep into the water table and become a separate problem. It is killing everything that the oil did not. Everything.

Be very vigilant when the government silences the voices. Hear what is not said. I am scared.

I say we all come out in support of banning BB guns and prosectuting all children who use them regardless of their age. We should make as many laws as possible to crack down on these heartless killers, and then prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. That will serve them.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Why are people surprised of this?

We've all seen oil damage before: the many, many fires caused by oil products, the destruction of so much land to harvest oil, squabbles among countries for oil resources...

The Exxon Mobil spill that continues to harm natural ecosystems and still affects the lives of the fishermen and other people whose need for an ecologically balanced water system is more immediate than ours.

    Why are we surprised, then?

We all know the risks of our use of oil. Does that stop us from depending on it...?

    No.

We have also seen them try and stop reporters from revealing dirty secrets to the public, as in the example of dolphin hunting in parts of Japan.

We (humans) are notorious for forgetting and repeating our mistakes.

The same cycles happen continuously. It is in our nature. We cannot stop them from happening, but we can reduce the extent of their harm.

That means realizing the consequences of your actions, especially the small ones like whether you truly need to drive to work or to school, or if you truly need a van or a large car that requires tons of gasoline.

    BP isn't to blame.
The government isn't to blame, either.

Both are guilty of human nature, and neither are any more guilty then every one of us.

  105. I feel guilty, because I drive more then the average American to get to work. Sure, I can blame the economy, say it's hard to find a job closer to home. I can blame BP, say they were negligent, greedy, immoral, etc. I could blame the oil industry on a whole, saying they've suppressed adoption of greener technology, or perhaps blame the universe, for making oil such a potent and accessible (and terrifyingly harmful) energy source. But I have to blame myself.

Every time we buy energy, we're voting with our dollars. So we need to bite the bullet, and buy less petroleum products. Spend more for the more fuel efficient car. Switch to a flex fuel car if possible. We could support alternative energy research with tax dollars and who we elect to office. We could support green energy by trying to get involved with the industry, get trained and participate.

We have a very tough road ahead of us, there is no cheap solution, we just happened to use the cheapest (face value, not bottom line), most potent solutions to our energy appetites first.

Maybe us all being more mindful of the hidden costs associated with petroleum will help motivate us to spend the extra dollars on cleaner technologies.

Jimmy go get some used motor oil and mix it with water....you will see how it changes and separates in water. Now, go buy some new motor oil, it is processed but regardless what color is it? BROWN YOU COMPLETE DEGENERATE

@ALL WHO BLAME "US". I do not recall ever having any say or a vote as to how we obtain our energy! If I had, I would have voted for clean energy sources. I would be willing to pay more for my energy and the cost involved in converting to cleaner resources. BP is to blame along with our government. BP had more safety violations(over 100) than all the other oil companies combined(less than 10)! It is widely known in the South that "oil men" are the most corrupt, greedy, cut throat business men in the nation. You can blame the politicians who benefit from their pay offs and republicans who subsidize these corporations in the name of capitalism and their trickle down theory as well.

Go out behind your house and choose one of the cars you have on blocks and drain some old motor oil out of it. Now, get a bucket of water and mix them. Wait a bit and you will get a vague idea of what water does to oil. Next go buy a quart of Motor Oil....what color is it Jimmy? Brown? Amber maybe? Take a wild stab at what color unprocessed crude oil might be? Hmmm BROWN MAYBE YOU MORON!

@YOU PEOPLE WHO BLAME "US" FOR THE GULF OIL DISASTER.
Maybe you are to BLAME, but I do not subscribe to that ridiculous attitude. When was I ever given a choice or a vote as to how we should address our energy needs in this country? NEVER! The oil industry are the most corrupt, greedy, cut-throat bunch of thugs this country has seen since the devastating industrial age of the early 20th century. They are actually still conducting business in much the same way as the early industrial pioneers had in their day. No surprise, since they were born of the early industrial age themseves. They thrive on political pay-offs and corruption. They supplement their bloated diet with the political malarky of the republicans and their "trickle down theory" subsidies. Heck, they own the local governments in the oil states! BP had more than 100 safety violations last year compared to less than 15 violations for the rest of the oil companies combined. So you tell me it is my greed for oil that is to blame for what happened in the Gulf? I THINK NOT YOU SPINELESS FOOLS!

The only salutation is if the people on this planet come to a complete standstill to stop shopping and watching T.V and shift their priorates to save this planet!!!! It's not like we don't have the technology but we lack the desire as whole to save us!! Most people on planet earth don't even think we have a serious problem. While the governments of the world are to busy playing the same games they have been for centuries, who got the bigger, better extra extra. There are no true leaders and when one comes along well, conveniently silence by death is their fate. - Funny thing is, not really funny, but the powers that be are so busy killing everything in sight that does not match their agenda,( greed, power, control ) that soon enough at this rate everybody is going to be dead and there won't be anyone to control or manipulate and well since the planet is dyeing a slow death cutting its lungs (killing the rain forests that produce oxygen, killing the ocean with off shore drilling, causing catastrophes like off the gulf, killing the air with well, you get the point! One day there won't be any one to control, or buy their products, then what!?! The earth will have the peace of mind it deserves. After all we forget that this is a living breathing organism! And right now it's bleeding to death!! Didn't think I was going to go off on a tangent, what's the point??!!?? Who wants to stop their life to save the planet??!! What government or so called world leader wants to do something radical like stop war to actually lead the people of this planet to take responsibility to clean it up and advocate to live in harmony with nature, oh wait, you can't make money that way. Every time Obama opens his mouth, out spews a lie. When we as a country adopt old-fashioned values and don't just blow off lies as "politics as usual" -that's when things will change. 2nd biggest problem...corruption again at all levels. Our taxpayer dollars have been used to develop electric cars...but when it was discovered that there would be no ongoing maintenance guess what happened? We don't even think about where this is coming from anymore, what it's doing to our ever so generous home because horrible things like this have been hidden from us for so long just so companies can hoard trillions of useless dollars all for themselves and hide it from the far more needy public, we now take them for granted and even joke about them leisurely. 140. One of my friends had a vision to clear up the oil spill in the gulf. We are all quite powerful in our individual right so lets see if we can pull our thougts and forces together to create something of beauty and positive action. So here is the vision for the next full moon.
Visualize a large basket made of sweetgrass it can be painted or designed however you like. It turns a clockwise direction and is positioned over the wohle where oil is spilling out of the earth. As the basket spins it fills with all the oil that has been spewing. Visualize the oil being pulled into the basket from the shore lines, from anything it has collected on and in, visualize the sea birds, fish, marine mammals, crustaceans, coral all sea life in the oil´s path being freed of the oil, every drop being returned to the basket this will take some time be precise. When it fully collected visualize the basket being turned into a turning basket of white light. Fill it with light with the intention of transmuting the oil into a blessing that ist not harmful, disapating all and stopping its flow. Let it continue to turn in clockwise direction creating a vortex that returns to the earth. Stopping the leak, stopping the spewing, stopping the spreading of this ooze. Visualize this vortex taking with the oil, alss misguided thougts and actions, unkindness, sadness, like a drain, let it flow back to mother earth as purity in white loving light. This is very important, make sure it is returned to the earth as white light and has drain in the earth. Returning only good into the earth. Namaste from Munich Germany Margali

  144. Seeing those pictures i must say i am deeply shocked. Concerning the scale and severeness of the environmental pollution the Deepwater Horizon incident seems to be not very far behind Chernobyl.

  146. There are some truths that most people can't deal with:

Logic, right, wrong, etc are realities that are decided by power.
The USA at this time is total power.
The governance of the USA is capital (money) orientated.
    Corporations control the US legislature.
    Bp is a corporation.
Bp is a de facto governing body of the USA.
Bp can do what it wants.
Any fine or sanction will be a mere slap on the hand to appease the US public and allow them rest in peace on their life support machine of reality TV.

  150. YOU WANNA WATCH SOMETHING THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND? WATCH WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR.

Here's a link to the full movie FREE to watch on youtube.

The EV1 was amazing for 1996 and guess what its 2010 and still people think the electric car is the future. Its the past. Oil companies killed it.

The designer of the engine had already made batteries sufficient to get 300miles per charge in 99'!
