Preface: The title is a parody of the fact that the government has effectively made it a felony to take pictures of oiled wildlife. Apologists for the new law say that photographers can simply use a telephoto lense to get the shots. But the best shots can only be taken from up close.
Indeed, BP has tried to cover up its blunders by lowballing spill estimates, keeping reporters out of areas hardest hit by the oil (and see this, this, this and this) and threatening to arrest them if they try to take pictures (and see this), hiding dead birds and other sealife, and using dispersants to hide the amount of spilled oil (the dispersants are only worsening the damage caused by the spill).
This post is focused on showing the dead birds and other sealife which BP is trying to hide.
(Dead fish on Grand Isle)
(Baby tern stuck in an oil patch on Grand Isle beach, with nearby fish abandoned by the bird's mother)
(Hermit crabs covered in oil on the shore of Grand Terre Island in Barataria Bay)
Stop! You are not authorized to see any more pictures of the oil spill, Citizen ... Do not look!
sigh what have they done. This is just heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteThe moral imperative of life is to live a life that detracts not at all from the lives available to those who will follow us into this world.
ReplyDeleteThis statement -above- is a categorically true moral statement that entirely envelopes all our logically valid moral notions -both inclusively and exclusively.
"Categorically" means, -always, -regardless the circumstances, AND -without any exception.
When something is categorically true, as is the moral imperative, you ignore it with sure peril at hand.
Based on the moral imperative of life, there is an entirely new knowledge set yet to be fully explored, comprehended and brought forth.
This is the ONLY door open to human free will.
Without this new knowledge set, humanity will NOT survive.
That knowledge set is called, Categorical Knowledge.
ANYONE who ignores Categorical Knowledge -is inviting this sort of disaster, and FAR WORSE again -for the future.
The sort of problem represented in these photos cannot be fixed with scientific knowledge. It is science that gave rise to this problem.
Science provides no solutions to this or any other problem for which -such a solution- does not also bring forth other science-caused problems tenfold the magnitude of the original problem science meant to address.
Who has the moral right to destroy the planet with their intellectual curiosity and bravado?
No one does.
The moral imperative of life is to live a life that detracts not at all from the lives available to those who will follow us into this world.
Thank you for showing us what the media refuses to. It's people like you, and the photographers who took these pictures, that provide needed information about events that affect us, and where big media(network AND cable news) continuously fail in a big way.
ReplyDeleteThank you.

When I was younger I read a book called "Stranger Than Fiction". It was about things that were supposed to be true but were nonetheless unbelievable.
ReplyDeletesad...yet we keep driving to work...keep buying petroleum products...keep these people in business....keep paying the price....
ReplyDeletesigh...look what WE have done.........
Thank you for posting. Evilbughead was 100% correct. These are all heartbreaking pictures.
ReplyDeleteThey should be using micro organisms to eat up this oil and preserve nature. I don't see why they are not doing this.
ReplyDeleteValdez has yet to be cleaned up!.........how many years ago was that........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
ReplyDeleteThis is 100 times more oil!

BP/TPTB: Terraforming operation phase 1 successful, our dark masters will be pleased upon arrival on this planet.
ReplyDeleteWow, downright scary dude.

Humanity= stupidity.
ReplyDeleteWe are not doing enough to clean up this devastating disaster. Without nature, plants, water, animals we could not be here..we would be dead. AND yet BP and other organizations are not doing enough to clean up this oil spill. They have the money but are not using it. They are cutting costs because after all all human's care about is money and making a profit NOT losing money!. People need to be thankful and grateful that we have this planet to live on and procreate on. Instead we don't give a sh*t about it and that's truly sad. I am ashamed what humanity is doing to this beautiful planet. Without this planet we wouldn't exsist.
I'd still like to see what TPTB/BP has to say about using straw to soak up the oil:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7JkFW5nwMQ
I suppose that solution does not suit TPTB...no toxic dispersants for some connected people to profit from I guess.
I wonder if they'll let "The Whale" do it's work? They've delayed deployment by a week...if you haven't heard of it, it's this huge ship that some crazy Taiwanese shipping magnate billionaire had retrofitted as a skimmer and sent it to the Gulf - on a whim and on his own dime. Amazing.
http://www.nola.com/news/gulf-oil-spill/index.ssf/2010/07/a_whale_oil_skimmer_testing_ex.html
Is anybody going to be punished for this disaster?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpJBsjKhRTo
Don't blame humanity for this mess. Those who are responsible are not human. They have no empathy or compassion. Those who are responsible are sub-human parasites that feed off the rest of us.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing that such a catastrophe can go on for so long. It appears the clean up has been taken with same the care and attention as a drunken stag do.
ReplyDeleteHas VHRADIOHD confused this blog for their myspace profile?
Where did he get the picture of the seal? The only marine mammals found in the Gulf are whales, dolphins and manatees. None of which look anything like the uncited picture between John Moore and Charlie Riedel. There are river otters in Louisiana, but not out at sea.
ReplyDeleteI hate government - I hate Corporations. They are evil by definition.
ReplyDeleteThe idea that they can criminalize photography because it hurts their 'image' is one more reason to hate both government and corporations.
How do we free ourselves from their police power over the destruction of the planet???
How did we get here?
I voted Obama... I believed the bastard was a good guy..... but if he had a hand in criminalizing photography of this disaster he's no better than any other pol.
All they care about is hiding their failures and enriching themselves and their friends.
Nothing will change until we get violent.-- I mean those of us with something to lose...
Ordinary, God fearing, taxpaying Americans will have to go nuclear to make these monsters give up the use of police power to protect the guilty and punish the innocent.
America is dead.
corexit's not just about money. it kills things much quicker and keeps more oil under sea so we can't see it all.
ReplyDeletesecondly there is growing information about second leaks occuring, either from the pipe leaking deep under the seabed which is a known fact, or a 10-20 mile away initial failed drill attempt, which damaged safety equipment and combined with further drilling practice 'negligence' (pumping water is deliberate, everyone is taught it's not the way to do it) helped cause the leak to occur.
Focusing on the spill is the tip of the iceberg. The spill is our second concern at the moment, stopping it is our first! This should be an international effort, the stakes are so high on this one as the partially missing pipe casing and now directly exposed rock further deteriorate. Can you eat poisoned and oily fish in your country if the entire patchy seafloor let go? What happens to the water cycle?
Forget 9/11 style state terrorism, this is the ultimate in false flags. Convenient patsy for the economy collapsing, 'government doing things for your own good' etc etc. BP is just the fall guy, complicity goes right through the roof of the white house and into the bankers, global elite and other bankrollers of the perpetual, 100 year old, barely improved, everlasting oil technology.
p.s. don't rely on the constitution, that was the only thing bush didn't lie about. It was created for slaves, it is just a piece of paper. The real law is the common law, the law of the land. It's much easier than the constitution :)
ReplyDeleteDon't cause harm, loss, injury, breach of the peace or defraud in contract.
And secondly without claiming your rights, you have none.
While this may be the direct responsibility of BP, it is also our collective responsibility. We share a part of the blame. Let's act responsibly and as adults.
ReplyDeleteEvery time we turn a light, every time we turn our car engine, every time we use plastic..we are using oil derived products.
We are supporting this industry with our actions. Cleaning up is only a first step, and BPs responsibility...where is ours? as citizens and consumers? What is each one of us do in our daily lives to reduce our dependency from oil so that this industry eventually disappears from the earth?
As sad as this catastrophe IS ~ 2011 will be MUCH WORSE to the point of ANNIHILATION of the entire UNIVERSE by Jehovah God who created it ALL. ReplyDeleteHere's a native american proverb:
ReplyDelete"When the white people will have cut the last tree, and killed the last animal, and polluted the last river, then they will realize they cannot eat the money".
Not enough people are aware, thus not enough people care. One has to know enough to care enough and one has to care enough to save, to ACT... There seems to be a massive disconnect between the realities that confront us (from ocean acidification to the Great pacific garbage patch) and the every day choices we make! This tragedy is one amongst many, and I am not sure I understand the ignorance and consequent apathy most people cocoon themselves in... This lack of heart is going to be the deciding factor for humanity's survival on earth. We have to grow a conscience and comprehend that all life is interlinked. We have one shot at working toward a collective future, and NOW is the time to call that shot.

I am so scared and sad, tearful of what we all did! yes, all we DID because of us wanting oil these companies that suck this stuff out like it's blood to make us live! Time to quit! I mean QUIT! What ever it takes do it cold turkey! I looked at the video, I see these pictures and those animals in the water are trying to live and are choking to death over our needs of oil? This hurts! Imagine this situation if it was our air and we are trying to breath but we suffer like these animals who live in the water? I don't know what to do? This is huge! please help these thoughts, animals, humans! Right? I need a place called home? I thought it was earth. My rump would be blistered if I made that mess!
ReplyDeleteRevelation 16:3 "The second angel poured out his bowl in the sea, and it turned into blood like that of a dead man, and every living thing in the sea died." (NIV)
ReplyDeleteI am going to stay anonymous as possible since I do not want to lose my job but as horrific this is and as much as I hate bp right now I can say I am currently working outside of a place that all the bp execs took helicopters from to go see first hand what was going on and upon their return some were un-phased, some looked shocked and some were actually crying. I will say I at least partially respect those men that were crying, those are they few bp board members that may now just understand how we feel down here in good old Louisiana.
ReplyDeleteOf course this is a tragedy, but can the author of this page name one person actually arrested and charged?
ReplyDeleteAlso, all reporters/professional photographers have cameras that can take high quality pictures from hundreds of yards away. This is hype.
@ webmaster: "we drive to work"... Well what else do you expect millions of working Americans to do? We are entrenched in a system that cannot change overnight. The best we can hope for currently is that those who provide us with energy take no chances when it comes to safety and security. Safety is NOT a number they can axe out of their budget plan. In the meantime, instead of saying 'Change!' how about educating people on how we can change?
ReplyDelete@Heather: Humanity does not equal stupidity! Maybe you're concept of humanity equal stupidity. Maybe you need to grow up!
The pictures of dead baby fish are not related to the oil spill, at least the fourth picture i know is not. That is the result of eutriphication and other processes.
ReplyDeleteRest of the pictures are sad though
@Rich
ReplyDeleteIt has very little to do with the media 'refusing' to show these images and tell these stories. There is a very literal media ban on the beaches and work areas. They've said media can't get within 65 feet of oil-spill areas.
There are some reporters who've managed to break through in some cases but matters aren't helped by the fact that ignorant people like you are around either. I guarantee you that news is largely based on access, something that is few and far between here,
Truly heartbreaking. God Bless all of those poor animals.
ReplyDeleteWe just helped produce a video using a lot of these pictures, and we're trying to get it noticed. Total non-profit non-spam link here:
ReplyDeletehttp://vimeo.com/13212007
These things are not banned or you would not see them here. It is a disaster zone. All the information is public. Move along, citizen.
ReplyDeleteThank you. This is the type of information that needs to be published for all to see. What happened to transparency? We have the right to know what is being done about such a horrible disaster and that it can/will be fixed... not in the future, but now!
ReplyDeleteHere at CitizenEffect, we recently did a Fact-Finding Mission where a couple of team members and bloggers (Geoff Livingston and Jill Foster) went for a week in an attempt to asses the damage and see what really needs to be done. Check it out on twitter (#citizengulf) or here: (http://citizeneffect.org/projects/gulf_oil_spill_fact_finding_mission)
In addition, we will be hosting a discussion panel about the trip on July 19 in DC. If you are unable to attend, you can sign in to UStream and participate.
@Nat Glad- Even though no formal arrests have been made, there are plenty of threats by police officers to confiscate cameras, memory cards and even arrest people who are taking pictures or video tapes of what is going on.
ReplyDeleteIt happened to Geoff Livingston during the Citizen Effect Gulf Mission and it happened to Marguerite Cravatt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pi8R_FUGys&feature=youtu.be
Thank you; better than words to see what we have done to our precious world. Time to turn our backs on the oil wars and get to work repairing our devastated world. Yes, US...the folks who fuel the crazy system with everyday actions, freely chosen, because we are the free people who self-govern.

ReplyDeletethis is horrible, I cried my eyes out..
ReplyDeleteWhat have WE done? - people. let's stop using this black shit!
ReplyDeletesince the oil spill I went out and bought a gas saving honda instead of driving around in my van, since I cant afford a electric car. Although I am paying for a extra insurance for Im not selling the van yet, the gas savings pays for it and more.
ReplyDeleteIt feels good to know I did something, to be less reliant on oil. Think of it, if everyone did this we would cut our reliance on oil in half. Thats a good start.
My sister has a honda fit, and we swapped cars. Of course it was on empty when I got it. I put in 20 dollars and drove over one hour to my destination, then about one hour back. The gas needle didnt even budge. If this was a truck it would be empty. For those who drive gas guzzlers - you are being robbed , your money is vanishing. Think of the things you could do with the gas savings people!
But what's new or different about this La-de-da I Get To Do What I Want On This Planet attitude? http://clallamatbay.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html#340627293426678528
ReplyDeleteThis information needs to get more attention from the mass media. It is hard to believe that a Shithole like Haiti is more important on a mass media scale than this epic disaster. wtf
ReplyDeleteReally!?!? What have *they* done!? What have *WE* done!!
ReplyDeleteOne of the most heartbreaking things I have ever seen. The only other thing worse than seeing these pics is seeing pics of what abortion does to a baby - a human life. Amazing how we will cry over seeing animals (mammals, etc.) dying or dead, but shrug our shoulders and blow it off over killing one's own baby. Pathetic.
ReplyDeleteBP, these greedy Mo**erfu**ers. Put 'em into jail, all of them.
ReplyDeleteDamned... how ugly is that?
ReplyDeleteLet's all hope the best!
-.-
One fishing boat kills 100 times more fish than what is in these pictures, yet we don't speak of it, One kid with a BB gun kills more birds than what the oil did, its not just the oil, its humanity that is killing the life of animals on earth. Its the Cars,Planes, Motorcycle, electricity, computers. you name we use petroleum in our everyday life.
ReplyDeleteI am so grateful to have seen these video footages that were not provided to us from "The Media In General" but, by you, "Jonathan Elinoff." You have opened my eyes wide to such a devastating disaster that will never replace all of the LIFE it has taken from us.

ReplyDeleteSad, Sad, and yet people go on driveing there fancy vehicles watching the lies were being fed by the news media and doing nothing to wake up and face the fact, that this oil spill is going to effect all our lifes and we have got to wake up fast, quit useing oil or we are finished as everything on our planet is going to vanish and death will prevail everywhere, because we would not quit useing oil!
Please people we have new energy ready to go now, demand that our president and senators allow it to come forth insted of oil!!!
I am the least violent man on this planet. But ...
ReplyDeleteWell, to all of those who think that all nations should work on this disaster: the U.S. have denied to accept foreign help, though offered, for no money at all, for free!

The pictures of the oceans make me furious. The pictures of the poor animals are unbelievably heartbreaking. I hope someone gets tortured for this disaster. They're about to make it illegal to even talk about as well, I bet. Cant tell people the truth without being slapped with a fine. It's not all sun rays and rainbows anymore.
ReplyDeleteOh so very sad, My heart sinks, the damage done. We must understand, that life as we knew it is over.
ReplyDeleteTears well up as I sit and think that my grandson will be able to tell his grandchildren of a time when he swam in the Golf of Mexico. And that there were fish and dolphins, with beautiful white birds and the smell of salt air.
SO VERY SAD, every fiber of my being weeps.
Charles, that looks like an otter, not a seal. Unfortunately, it appears to be from the Valdez, not the Gulf:

IT took me a while to get to it but thank you very much, I've been so preoccupied with stopping the use of Corexit or any unnatural dispersant I have left out the pointless harm done buy burning. I will not make that mistake again.Nor will I when I demonstrate, post, sign petitions, reduce my use of petroleum products,Spill into the Mall on Labor Day weekend,& vote.
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS AN ULTIMATE DISASTER TO LIFE AND ENVIRONMENT. IT HAS BEEN DONE BY DESIGN. Eric V. Encina
ReplyDeleteLet these poor animals die.
ReplyDeleteHumanity will pay the price, and that right soon.
The sad ugly truth is that life as we knew it is over. Forever changed, and despite the empty words from the "people who know" The Gulf will never be the same again.
ReplyDeleteI saddens me to think that my grandson will be able to tell his grandchildren that there once was a time when he swam in the gulf and the waters were blue, and full of life. That there were fish and dolphins, whales, and great beautiful white birds. Of the smell of fresh salt air.
SO VERY SAD, every fiber of my sole weeps.
It may be "cleaned up" some day but will probably take decades, or even centuries to be restored.
ReplyDeleteOMG, these poor creatures. This breaks my heart. We have GOT TO GET OFF OF OIL. This is not the the first time this kind of thing has happened and it won't be the last.
ReplyDelete@Janice: the fact that you compare this to abortion is sickening to me. Shame on you. Abortion doesn't "kill" anything.
ReplyDeleteThere's no doubt about it; this is one of the greatest disasters I've ever witnessed in my 25 years of life, and it frustrates me to know that it won't be over by the time I'm old and dying. By then, Haiti will be rebuilt, 9/11 and the war will be nothing but a chapter in history books and Katrina will be just another natural disaster the u.s. has so easily overcome.... but this oil will still be polluting that water, and will have killed more animals and lifeforms than there are people on this earth.
This is the saddest thing in our lifetime...hopefully it will not be repeated like World War II. However, humanity's penchant for war, natural resource extraction, and capitalist pursuits will only leave us on a dead planet. We are a horrible species...all this greatness in our minds, yet we choose to allow civilization to be co-opted by the ones most diseased in the minds...absolute power has corrupted our earth. Maybe, maybe, a smaller population once or thrice decimated will be able to recover and this era will be done. Until we can handle our ethical responsibilities, then we must collectively stop pretending issues like LeBron James, Spies like us, et cetera et cetera matter. A national holiday must be declared for lest we forget about this tragedy.
ReplyDelete@George:
ReplyDeleteNot all car trips are long. Some jobs are more bike/walk/transit-friendly, some are less. Look for opportunities to not use your car, and take them. You may find (over time) that there are more opportunities than you thought. I started biking to work, about 40%, over 4 years ago.
If work has no shower, hot weather is a problem; you can wear more clothes in the winter, but there is a limit to how much you can take off (the riding is relatively comfortable, it's the stopping that sucks).
I ride a cargo bike, a nice, expensive one. A less expensive one, that hits many of the sweet spots (can carry kids easily) is the Madsen. Google it. Still not cheap, but gets a lot done. Think "bicycle minivan". My bike is more like "bicycle pickup". Very cheapest route to a cargo bike is to take an existing mountain bike (no rear shocks allowed) and add an XtraCycle extension to it. It works, I used one for three years (7500 miles) before upgrading.
You CAN ride in the winter, helps if you ride a mountain bike, they (Nokian) make snow tires for bikes. Get carbide studs, not steel studs. Balaclava, ski gloves, boots, lights, you are good to go.
My ride is ten miles (one-way). It sucked at first, but I knew I could do it because I did it (easily, and more) when I was a kid. It doesn't suck now.
I hope this helps, I realize that many people think I sound like a nut, but look where "normal" has gotten us. Start small, work up to, and push yourself a little bit, and don't let up.
I'm not trying to be funny and I am compassionate but are these photos real? I ask because I have friends in the area and no one knows much of anything. The oil on the guys hands looks refined and chocolate syrup was poured on some dead animals.
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting these images. If any good is to come of this disaster then I hope one positive outcome is that a sufficient number of people are moved to voice a demand for a different future for all of us. And a reflective realisation in corporate headquarters around the globe that corporate enterprises could use this to re-consider their true purpose; do they exist to serve shareholders or exist for a far greater purpose; to serve humanity and the living planet.
ReplyDelete@Patrick:

Unthinkable & unbelievable. I couldn't bear to look at these images and yet I had to. What are some of the best things we can do as 'regular civilians' to assist at this stage?
ReplyDeleteThis is the stupid comment of the thread:
ReplyDelete"One kid with a BB gun kills more birds than what the oil did,"
Riiiiight.
Straw works as a sorbent, but it takes a LOT of straw, it's expensive, and hard to transport. It's not a refusal, it's a not-practical.
The government and BP both share blame in this from top to bottom.
But, remember that oil is used for plastic, lubrication, fuel, pesticides, paint, rubber, pretty much everything. To speak of just stopping is ludicrous.
To speak of using "less" power is ludicrous. It not only will never happen, it can't happen. Unless, of course, you turn off your TV, iPhone, computer and lights? Didn't think so.
However, we can use more efficient and environmentally friendly power. France produces more electricity than it uses, all nuclear. Canada, Japan and China are all building more nuclear plants. Hysteria aside, nuclear is very safe, very clean, and very efficient. There's no point in arguing. In twenty years, you WILL be using nuclear power. The question is, will it be domestic or foreign?
Just a little reality check: where did the images come from? AP, Reuters, NASA, U.S. Navy. Who are they THE MEDIA and THE GOVERNMENT.
ReplyDeleteReuters, MSN, Yahoo, Esquire, Slate, NY Times, NY Post, Daily Morning News, Seattle Times, on and on and on have used these same images to tell of the horror of the spill. They're not keeping it from you. Almost every single news outlet has front page stories about the spill since day one and continue to do so as can be seen today (see msn.com, news.yahoo.com, news.aol.com, nypost.com, nytimes.com, foxnews.com, cnn.com) it's everywhere!
65 feet is paltry considering you have paparazzi hang out of a helicopter and get a shot of your favorite celeb in her backyard from 1/4 of a mile away. I'm so tired of hearing the photographers act all namby-pamby about how the distance affects the lens choice and exposure and BLAH BLAH BLAH! I'd love to hear a war correspondent griping like that "well the soldiers wouldn't let me get close enough to the bomb so I could get a really nice shot with my wide angle, so I skipped it instead." Bull! A real reporter is going to harangue the coast guard commander until he gets on a boat or other transport. I real reporter is going to go and shoot what he can and potentially break the rules to get a shot. None of this sissy "but I might get arrested" or "I'll have to adjust the exposure and it won't be a pretty as it should." Are they reporters or are they making pretty post cards?
The other frustrating thing about this stupidity is look at Richard Matthews up to his eyeballs in the oil for nothing other than the sensationalism of it. Why not put on a Hazmat suit and then dive, you can get the same underwater pictures without risking serious illness from the oil, dispersant, and decayed and dead animals. This is exactly why they made the 65 foot rule, to keep people like Matthews and hundreds and thousands of bloggers from attempting the same thing, possibly damaging equipment to get a better look, or reconfiguring equipment because they saw something on the internet that said the buoys should be zig-zagged not straight. Not only that but they're protecting the state and government from lawsuits. If they didn't impose some restriction you'd have a bunch of people suing about how they got sick from the oil, or the dispersant caused third degree burns, or they got some awful bacterial infection from handling dead fish and why didn't the government warn them!?
It is sad that some people would rather pretend that this is a political problem and not an ecological disaster.
ReplyDeleteEvilbughead said "what have THEY done"
ReplyDeleteThe horrifyingly CORRECT question is "What have I... done."
It's OUR cars, OUR airconditioners OUR home heating, OUR 'plane flights, OUR... that have caused this.
Now I MUST try and change my ways...
@Courtney..
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding?? Abortion kills a human being! Have you ever seen an ultrasound? You must be a ver uneducated person to have made a statement like that. A fetus has a heart beat at 6 weeks and a soul from the start. Life is life.. killing is killing. Abortion is murder.
Are the images heartbreaking?
ReplyDeleteFor God's sake! They are supposed to be outrageous, not just heartbreaking. More than sad, that's absurd! We should be willing to do something about it, to take a stand on this degrading situation.
I defy anyone to look at these images and not feel partly responsible - anyone who drives a car, flies on a plane, fishes from a boat or catches a bus, has created this demand for oil, that is now destroying all life in the Gulf of Mexico. I am devastated and feel helpless to change anything. The world needs to invest in revewable energy NOW! why are we waiting when we have the technology...GREED and POWER...once we upset the balance to the degree the scales are tipped irreparably what future is there for us???? Wake up, take a stand, raise your voice.
ReplyDeleteWhy would you stick this in a frame and all on one page? I guess so it can't be indexed.
ReplyDeleteWorthy effort, questionable approach.

but really... really, damn you if you want to blame this all on BP. anyone wasting time pointing fingers at this point is wrecklessly harping on a very obivious point, and not taking the situation seriously. your blame is a 1st world luxury, that. thanks to our first world habits, will not be possible for much longer. enjoy your food, air and clean water while you still have it.
fucking idiots!!!
ReplyDeleteWho gives a damn?
ReplyDeleteIt's just wildlife, what do we owe them. They do very little for humanity, why should we care what happens to them. I never understood why people felt so strongly for them.
"They're beautiful creatures", ect.
So what if some seafood dies off, as long as the skimmed oil goes to good use. Good thing it's finally against the law to cover this garbage.
The US government should give the example by revoking the BP drilling liscense and prohibit BP and it's minions to operate in the USA. Additionally fine them 50 billion dollars for damages and imprison these irresponsable idiots for at least 15 years.
ReplyDeleteso sad
ReplyDeletemay prey god to clean it verry fast
Did BP or Obama make it a felony to take pictures?
ReplyDeleteThe sad fact is that the chosen one is impotent and he is wearing no clothes.
i cried my fucking heart out
ReplyDeletei hope the earth and natuer come back to kill all humans
we are bad for this plante we wasted what was given to us
we have killed OUR FUCKING HOME!
and for every one who believer in a god
WE HAVE DESTROYED OUR PARADISE
It's not "what have they done?" that we should be asking, it's "what have we done?"
ReplyDeleteNot taking responsibility for a system we have enabled and contributed to is part of the reson this happens again and again.
things will never change unless people wake up and realise that we are all conditioned into this polluting, wasting lifestyle by corporatons and the monetary/scarcity system our sick planet is supposedly thriving on. if you care about true change, for our own lives and the good of our small planet watch zeitgeist and zeitgeist addendum and spread the word... THINGS NEED TO CHANGE!
ReplyDeleteAs long as the Management dont get involved personal nothing will change. The Management have the responsibility for this. Tony Hayward makes how many Million per Year in his own Pocket? Why dont take all of his Money as Penalty? He and the Rest of the BP Management has to bleed personal to understand what the Oil Spill means to all the Animals and the People like Fishers out there.
ReplyDeleteJust my humble Opinion.

We eleminate our world with our own hands, we need no others -.-
I remember when the ocean was BLUE. Now I'm thoroughly depressed :( what have we done to our planet?
ReplyDeleteEspecially regarding BP and Government censorship, is anyone organizing demonstrations and protests? Why is there not a large group demonstrating and doing non-violent direct action down there? If anyone has a line on this, please let me know (dss1209 at geemail) and also post here.
ReplyDeleteThis is only the tip of the iceburg. How will they ever clean that up?It's so wide spread and deadly. Why doesn't Obama take over and get the job done. The clock is ticking and with every second that goes by the oil is flowing freely. In my whole life I could never have immaginned this scenario,it's my worst nightmare times a billion.God help us!
ReplyDeleteThis is Capitalism at work.BP was never talking about stopping the flow it was always about RECOVERY. We are the most destructive and only self destructive creature on this Planet.
ReplyDeleteWake up people and stop this KILLING.
The tears are pouring down my face as I see these things once again. How can I not be moved? My home is hurting, and all I can do is to paint and paint and I have been because I cannot stop crying- see dixietaylor.zenfolio.com.
ReplyDeleteYesterday driving down the river road in St. John parish I saw oil in the drainage canals along side the road. It is no longer on the coast. It is in the fresh water now. Today is July 13, 2010. Day 85.
It is not just the oil, but also the dispersant they sprayed on it. The dispersant is POISONOUS. It is going to seep into the water table and become a separate problem. It is killing everything that the oil did not. Everything.
Be very vigilant when the government silences the voices. Hear what is not said. I am scared.
Kemble! I totally agree. It's not BP's fault, it's those damn kids with the BB guns that are to blame for the destruction of wildlife. Why are we even focusing on BP? I say we all come out in support of banning BB guns and prosectuting all children who use them regardless of their age. We should make as many laws as possible to crack down on these heartless killers, and then prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. That will serve them.
ReplyDeleteWhy are people surprised of this?
ReplyDeleteWe've all seen oil damage before: the many, many fires caused by oil products, the destruction of so much land to harvest oil, squabbles among countries for oil resources...
The Exxon Mobil spill that continues to harm natural ecosystems and still affects the lives of the fishermen and other people whose need for an ecologically balanced water system is more immediate than ours.
Why are we surprised, then?
We all know the risks of our use of oil. Does that stop us from depending on it...?
No.
We have also seen them try and stop reporters from revealing dirty secrets to the public, as in the example of dolphin hunting in parts of Japan.
We (humans) are notorious for forgetting and repeating our mistakes.
The same cycles happen continuously. It is in our nature. We cannot stop them from happening, but we can reduce the extent of their harm.
That means realizing the consequences of your actions, especially the small ones like whether you truly need to drive to work or to school, or if you truly need a van or a large car that requires tons of gasoline.
BP isn't to blame.
The government isn't to blame, either.
Both are guilty of human nature, and neither are any more guilty then every one of us.

Rainner, tell me more about these dark masters. How does one stay on their 'good' side?
Buy more BP products maybe?
Thanks a lot for the pictures. I am from Germany and would like to put some of these pictures on my blog:
ReplyDeletehttp://finkenwarderbote.blogspot.com/
Please contact me.
I feel guilty, because I drive more then the average American to get to work. Sure, I can blame the economy, say it's hard to find a job closer to home. I can blame BP, say they were negligent, greedy, immoral, etc. I could blame the oil industry on a whole, saying they've suppressed adoption of greener technology, or perhaps blame the universe, for making oil such a potent and accessible (and terrifyingly harmful) energy source. But I have to blame myself.
ReplyDeleteEvery time we buy energy, we're voting with our dollars. So we need to bite the bullet, and buy less petroleum products. Spend more for the more fuel efficient car. Switch to a flex fuel car if possible. We could support alternative energy research with tax dollars and who we elect to office. We could support green energy by trying to get involved with the industry, get trained and participate.
We have a very tough road ahead of us, there is no cheap solution, we just happened to use the cheapest (face value, not bottom line), most potent solutions to our energy appetites first.
Maybe us all being more mindful of the hidden costs associated with petroleum will help motivate us to spend the extra dollars on cleaner technologies.
I am crying... That is all I can say..
ReplyDeleteThank you for staying real and posting what's actually taking place. The people have (and need) a right to know the truth. There is absolutely no reason any of these images should be kept from public view; it's the TRUTH. Deal people.
ReplyDeleteDo you know what's really bitter about this catastrophe?
ReplyDeleteThey (or maybe I should say, we) will not learn anything from this. This kind of desaster will happen again and again.
Get ready for the next spill.
So far the comments where pretty good. Just let us not get to PARTY POLITICAL here. We are all in fault, none of us is doing enough to stop using Petroleum or there related Products. There are plenty of ways of renewable Energy but so far it is easier to talk about them then to use them. We are not even locking for excuse, --- they are readily available. And we us them because it is----easier. It is very easy to make a comment like "He did not react fast enough",---what is fast enough? Why where no safety features in place for a situation like this in the first place, do not tell me this NEVER came up. Did Valdez not give us to think ????? SHAME ON ALL POLITICIANS TO NOT THINK OF THIS BEFORE IT HAPPENED.
ReplyDelete@Jimmy. YOU ARE AN ABSOLUTE IDIOT. You obviously do not have people in the Gulf area and you are also ignorant and uneducated in regard to the different types of crude oil. Jimmy go get some used motor oil and mix it with water....you will see how it changes and separates in water. Now, go buy some new motor oil, it is processed but regardless what color is it? BROWN YOU COMPLETE DEGENERATE
ReplyDelete@ALL WHO BLAME "US". I do not recall ever having any say or a vote as to how we obtain our energy! If I had, I would have voted for clean energy sources. I would be willing to pay more for my energy and the cost involved in converting to cleaner resources. BP is to blame along with our government. BP had more safety violations(over 100) than all the other oil companies combined(less than 10)! It is widely known in the South that "oil men" are the most corrupt, greedy, cut throat business men in the nation. You can blame the politicians who benefit from their pay offs and republicans who subsidize these corporations in the name of capitalism and their trickle down theory as well.
@PEOPLE DRIVING HUMMERS, V-8's and GAS HOGS. Get over your vanity. You and your shallow way of life are a large part of the problem. You are just another Jimmy.
@ DrewAPicture
ReplyDeleteactually it's ignorant people like you who take things out of context that make matters worse. To attack Rich for merely pointing out the normal MO of the mainstream media shows were your heart lies. The media in general have done a great job at espousing the party line so far, I'm not talking about the photographers trying to gain access I'm talking about the coverage failing to expose the true extent of this disaster. You are the ignorant one not Rich!
Why dont they ban off shore drilling before it happens again the fools: this is just a warning it will happen again.
ReplyDelete@Jimmy. YOU ARE A COMPLETE IDIOT. You are certainly lying about having people in the Gulf. You are obviously not only uneducated, but ignorant and devoid of all common sense. Go out behind your house and choose one of the cars you have on blocks and drain some old motor oil out of it. Now, get a bucket of water and mix them. Wait a bit and you will get a vague idea of what water does to oil. Next go buy a quart of Motor Oil....what color is it Jimmy? Brown? Amber maybe? Take a wild stab at what color unprocessed crude oil might be? Hmmm BROWN MAYBE YOU MORON!
ReplyDelete@YOU PEOPLE WHO BLAME "US" FOR THE GULF OIL DISASTER.
Maybe you are to BLAME, but I do not subscribe to that ridiculous attitude. When was I ever given a choice or a vote as to how we should address our energy needs in this country? NEVER! The oil industry are the most corrupt, greedy, cut-throat bunch of thugs this country has seen since the devastating industrial age of the early 20th century. They are actually still conducting business in much the same way as the early industrial pioneers had in their day. No surprise, since they were born of the early industrial age themseves. They thrive on political pay-offs and corruption. They supplement their bloated diet with the political malarky of the republicans and their "trickle down theory" subsidies. Heck, they own the local governments in the oil states! BP had more than 100 safety violations last year compared to less than 15 violations for the rest of the oil companies combined. So you tell me it is my greed for oil that is to blame for what happened in the Gulf? I THINK NOT YOU SPINELESS FOOLS!
PROSECUTE BP NOW. PROSECUTE BP NOW. PROSECUTE BP NOW.
OPEN YOUR EYES AND GET OFF YOUR LAZY REARS AND HOLD YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS RESPONSIBLE FOR NOT DOING THEIR JOBS!!!!
I'm so sad by the sight of these photographs!!! I wanna say so much out of pain and frustration what's the point!!!???!! The only salutation is if the people on this planet come to a complete standstill to stop shopping and watching T.V and shift their priorates to save this planet!!!! It's not like we don't have the technology but we lack the desire as whole to save us!! Most people on planet earth don't even think we have a serious problem. While the governments of the world are to busy playing the same games they have been for centuries, who got the bigger, better extra extra. There are no true leaders and when one comes along well, conveniently silence by death is their fate. - Funny thing is, not really funny, but the powers that be are so busy killing everything in sight that does not match their agenda,( greed, power, control ) that soon enough at this rate everybody is going to be dead and there won't be anyone to control or manipulate and well since the planet is dyeing a slow death cutting its lungs (killing the rain forests that produce oxygen, killing the ocean with off shore drilling, causing catastrophes like off the gulf, killing the air with well, you get the point! One day there won't be any one to control, or buy their products, then what!?! The earth will have the peace of mind it deserves. After all we forget that this is a living breathing organism! And right now it's bleeding to death!! Didn't think I was going to go off on a tangent, what's the point??!!?? Who wants to stop their life to save the planet??!! What government or so called world leader wants to do something radical like stop war to actually lead the people of this planet to take responsibility to clean it up and advocate to live in harmony with nature, oh wait, you can't make money that way. Thank you Jonathan for these photographs!!
ReplyDeleteThis is so shocking! I really hope they plug the leak soon!
ReplyDeleteIt's sad though, we only know about this one because it happened in American waters.. I hear this happens a lot in Africa, due to Shell rather than BP.. Yet it never even makes a side column in the papers.
This is shocking and deeply saddening, we don't get to see these pictures normally. We just hear "It's under control"...
ReplyDeleteBP should be held accountable for everything they have done! I for one will NEVER buy BP fuel again.
What have they done to the earth?
ReplyDeleteWhat have they done to our fair sister?
Ravaged and plundered
And raped her
And bit her
Stuck her with knives
In the side of the dawn
And tied her with fences
And dragged her down
- Jim Morrison
And this is only what is happening on the surface. We have no idea of the destruction happening in the deep oceans.
ReplyDelete@Jimmy. Actually you got a point but regardless, this is a huge disaster noone can deny it!!
ReplyDeleteWorst case scenario? this is the beginning of the end of the world if we can't stop the spill in the near very near future.

ReplyDeleteGreat comments by most with a notable exception to the author of the "BB GUNS" comments. The REAL PROBLEM seems overlooked...LACK OF HONEST POLITICIANS AT ALL LEVELS...they lie about giving us what we want - alternative green fuels, clean cars using no oil products, they lie about US oil reserves, etc. AL GORE sickens me with his lies about the environment. Every time Obama opens his mouth, out spews a lie. When we as a country adopt old-fashioned values and don't just blow off lies as "politics as usual" -that's when things will change. 2nd biggest problem...corruption again at all levels. Our taxpayer dollars have been used to develop electric cars...but when it was discovered that there would be no ongoing maintenance guess what happened? They were all scrapped after successful trials. Going back to GORE for a moment...anyone want to wager? I'll bet he and his cronies have invested in technology that he is pushing for adoption of, in order to "help stop global warming" another big lie. It's not easy....I am fighting a town police department over lies by their officers....I will win, but we need to put a stop to LIES ! More people need to insist on truth at every level of their life. PS: please check your spelling when posting
ReplyDeleteIt's actually the government that has set the media restrictions. You can blame the Hope-n-Change folks. But don't let the facts get in the way of your rant,
ReplyDeleteOh man, I wish I could comment on every comment but that's too time consuming.
ReplyDelete@Robin
Please be less vague about "huge disaster." I can think of several disasters bigger than this one that the planet earth has survived from.
--------
@"Save the planet" bullshit
You people have really got to cool down. The planet isn't going anywhere, we are.
I'm sure many people are aware of George Carlin. Although being a comedian, he still made some very good points in his routines/jokes. The planet has been around for roughly 4.5 billion years, yet we think that we are going to destroy it. Tell that to the solar flares, volcanoes, and earthquakes, to name a few, that have ravished the earth since who knows when.

I would like to know who proposed the legislation or what section of what act was amended. I detest what has happened there but I am also curious of the details. I really don't sense good journalism here. Are we talking BP officials, Louisianna State, Local Governments or Obama's Administration. Fill in the blanks please.
ReplyDeleteSo so wrong.
ReplyDeleteI this day and age we have the technology to fly to the moon but save our nature and we're left scratching our heads.
This is terrible news. I’m furious by the impact of BP’s irresponsibility and its lack of accountability. Thank you for sharing and creating awareness.
ReplyDelete:)
ReplyDeletewe need to be going green and geting away from oil as much as possable. http://www.mancosgem.com/goinggreen/
ReplyDeleteKeep up the great work. As a photographer I find it repulsive the limits Obama and BP are putting on Free Speech. First Amendment it the first for a reason. If photographers can't shoot his stuff who will tell the story?
ReplyDeleteThis sure is upsetting. Precious litle lives are being lost. Hope this is rectified soon. :(
ReplyDeleteIt is terrible that we are asking for all this to happen to other lives, just so we can have the subtle, unnecessary luxury of driving. All of the other lives we ruin just so we can have something to last us a couple days or so, and then go back for more. We don't even think about where this is coming from anymore, what it's doing to our ever so generous home because horrible things like this have been hidden from us for so long just so companies can hoard trillions of useless dollars all for themselves and hide it from the far more needy public, we now take them for granted and even joke about them leisurely. As long as we buy less from these corporations, the less these massacres will occur.
ReplyDeleteOMG, thanks Julie for the images; they need to be seen!! Earth is crying : ( this is heartwrenching our beloved animals, sealife... #catchatear

These photos are terrible! I can't believe the destruction BP have caused!
ReplyDeleteAnd trying to make it so that people can't document what they have done is so sneaky!
They need to take responsibility for their actions and not try hide behind idiotic laws.

ReplyDeleteOil, just doesn't allow us to drive, it allows us to have many necessities. If you don't like oil and want to get away from it, you can start clearing out your houses of anything plastic.
@Miltski
How can we start to take care of the planet if we haven't even learned to properly take care of ourselves yet?
I too am shocked..........but then, are we not all guilty for wanting more and more oil, and all it creates (food, packaging, travel etc etc) and as cheap as possible?
ReplyDeleteIf this ain't going to happen again, its not about getting a super-strong well-head fixing, it's about EVERYBODY WHO CONSUMES OIL (we all do one way or the other!) making massive life changes.
Think.....
The automobile contributes to health problems as obesity, respiratory issues and diabetes along with its neuropathy and host of silent killers. The greatest and worst invention ever. It is time to build highways safe for bikers to use, today you no longer need to travel hours to go to an office to work. IBM has tens of thousands of people working from home and saves billions on office space. TIME TO DO SOMETHING AND STOP WHINING AMERICA.
ReplyDeleteTerrible! Sad ...man will never learn.
ReplyDeleteThis is very disturbing.
ReplyDeletehow ever the humankind is responsible for all this and surely we have to prepare for the reaction of nature through great disasters. we have almost disturbed the cycle of nature and we have to pay for this....
ReplyDeleteBro this is some fucked up shit. I'm not very intelligent but I know some rights are being taken away.
ReplyDelete@ Don: Moral platitudes in this case seem less than helpful and on the edge of being either vacuous or just inane.
ReplyDeleteyour scenario appears to point to a "Twelve Monkeys" and that is nothing more than an anarchists manifesto.
The loss of life forms in the Gulf sucks, no one can deny that, with the exception of Hugo Chavez and the ChiComs who both want more drilling in deep water.
Moral platitudes though, remain just that. Empty rhetoric.
If I have misconstrued what you wrote, I apologize now.
One of my friends had a vision to clear up the oil spill in the gulf. We are all quite powerful in our individual right so lets see if we can pull our thougts and forces together to create something of beauty and positive action. So here is the vision for the next full moon.
ReplyDeleteVisualize a large basket made of sweetgrass it can be painted or designed however you like. It turns a clockwise direction and is positioned over the wohle where oil is spilling out of the earth. As the basket spins it fills with all the oil that has been spewing. Visualize the oil being pulled into the basket from the shore lines, from anything it has collected on and in, visualize the sea birds, fish, marine mammals, crustaceans, coral all sea life in the oil´s path being freed of the oil, every drop being returned to the basket this will take some time be precise. When it fully collected visualize the basket being turned into a turning basket of white light. Fill it with light with the intention of transmuting the oil into a blessing that ist not harmful, disapating all and stopping its flow. Let it continue to turn in clockwise direction creating a vortex that returns to the earth. Stopping the leak, stopping the spewing, stopping the spreading of this ooze. Visualize this vortex taking with the oil, alss misguided thougts and actions, unkindness, sadness, like a drain, let it flow back to mother earth as purity in white loving light. This is very important, make sure it is returned to the earth as white light and has drain in the earth. Returning only good into the earth. Namaste from Munich Germany Margali

ReplyDeleteSeeing those pictures i must say i am deeply shocked. Concerning the scale and severeness of the environmental pollution the Deepwater Horizon incident seems to be not very far behind Chernobyl.
ReplyDeleteTHIS WORLD NEEDS A REVOLUTION A NEW WAY OF THINKING YES UTOPIA! When are we going to give it a try. There are some truths that most people can't deal with:
ReplyDeleteLogic, right, wrong, etc are realities that are decided by power.
The USA at this time is total power.
The governance of the USA is capital (money) orientated.
Corporations control the US legislature.
Bp is a corporation.
Bp is a de facto governing body of the USA.
Bp can do what it wants.
Any fine or sanction will be a mere slap on the hand to appease the US public and allow them rest in peace on their life support machine of reality TV.

The EV1 was amazing for 1996 and guess what its 2010 and still people think the electric car is the future. Its the past. Oil companies killed it.
The designer of the engine had already made batteries sufficient to get 300miles per charge in 99'!
